4.4 million blog posts are published each day, which means that the chances of this post being discovered are better than the chances of winning the lottery. And that’s the optimistic in me! ☺️

 

I clearly don’t get disheartened by mere statistics; I’m a data consultant after all. You can always find some statistics to support your cause, such as the fact that there are 4.6 billion daily internet users, 77% of whom read these blogs.

In This Week’s Blog, I Want To Share The 3 Main Reasons For Starting This Website:

#1 Being inspired by the book “Show Your Work”

 

#2 Building a network of like-minded people

 

#3 To learn a number of new skills

 

Let’s deep dive into each of these:

#1 Being inspired by the book “Show Your Work”

One of my favourite YouTuber recommended this book a year ago, which at the time, I didn’t bother reading. A few months later, I stumbled upon the book summary again and decided to order a copy via Amazon Prime (thanks to the wife’s membership!)

 

Austin Kleon; beautifully summarises how much we’re missing out by not sharing our work. This was a small book but was packed with amazing advice on how sharing our process over product helps build a social connection with people.

 

Nowadays, people care less about the polished end product but more about how the product was achieved, which is why social media platforms like Tik Tok & Instagram are so popular. People want to relate to the real “you” and not the finished product that you portray yourself as in your books, works or LinkedIn profiles.

 

Another great lesson from the book is about “teaching what you know”. I have been a big advocate of this and throughout my career have made an active effort to teach others around me about the world of consulting and data.

 

Doing this openly, of course, inspires more people than just my circle of friends but also inevitably attracts criticism and learning opportunities.

 

And finally, the lesson around not thinking of yourself as a genius. If you’ve read some of my blog posts, I try and focus on sharing what I know and the process of it rather than painting myself as a guru in each of those areas. Life experiences shape all of us and simply sharing these can be lessons for all of us, including myself.

People want to relate to the real “you” and not the finished product that you portray.....💭

#2 Building a network of like-minded people

No matter how niche my skill sets are; there is always someone else doing similar things to me or has similar interests to me. This statement couldn’t be truer when we put the worldwide web against it. There are communities of people talking about consulting or are excited about how data is changing the way we live.

 

One of my favourite articles on the internet, has this concept explained, on what to write about on your personal blog. Things “you know”, “are excited about”, and “believe in” are the 3 main things you should write about. This is also very true.

 

To have consistency in my content creation, if the above 3 items are not what I’m writing about, I will very quickly lose interest.

 

As a consultant, I know quite well that having a network of like-minded people is really important, as this helps keep on top of the latest developments around my niche, and also provides an opportunity to add direct value to peoples’ lives and finally helps to keep me motivated.

#3 To learn a number of new skills

When I started researching how to create a blog, there was an overwhelming number of tutorials on YouTube and Google.

 

I managed to deduce, that unless I was prepared to splash out some cash on hiring a web designer, I would have to teach myself a plethora of new skills.

 

Surprisingly, even in this day and age of low / no-code applications, there were quite a few new elements to learn rather than it being totally drag and drop.

 

These included:

 

  • How to buy domain and hosting
  • How to use WordPress
  • What themes would provide the perfect UX
  • How to create a subscription and contact page
  • How to SSL protect the website 🔐
  • Where to find royalty-free images
  • How to do basic SEO
  • Writing in a blog structure and reduce the corporate-speak ☺️

Luckily some of the design skills I learnt in my data visualisation days, definitely helped.

 

Elements such as correct colour combination, getting the right spacing and only using the right visual for the text.

Conclusion

Hope this has provided some insights into my motivation for creating this website.
