The pandemic has made us all re-evaluate our lives, take stock of our priorities and made us adapt to change more rapidly than we ever thought we could; so what leadership traits are needed for the consulting leaders of tomorrow?

In This Week’s Blog We’ll Explore The Top 5 Leadership Traits:

#1 Leaders who are accountable

#2 Leaders who show vulnerabilities

#3 Leaders who care about their teams

#4 Leaders who are passionate

#5 Leaders who are humble

Let’s dive into each of these:

#1 Leaders who are accountable

Isn’t this obvious? The buck stops with the leader, whether you are middle management with small teams or a senior exec leading large divisions.

The buck stops with you! And the biggest sign of leadership failure is to put your hands up when the going gets tough. Or to throw your team under the bus when a project or an initiative fails.

True leaders hold themselves accountable for the challenges the team face and with the pandemic making the world even more digital than it was previously, it’s important that accountability shines through client and internal conference calls.

This also means, leaders are available for difficult conversations and to provide feedback to their teams.

There is no weakness in showing your vulnerability......💭

#2 Leaders who show vulnerabilities

This is hard for some people to digest, but humans relate to other humans. If you show up every day as if the pandemic or anything that came with it has not impacted you one bit, your team will not be able to relate with you.

There is no weakness in showing your vulnerability.

There have been times in the pandemic, where you would have struggled to find the motivation to go-on another day. Guess what? Your teams feel the same.

Asking them how they are, and sharing your struggles will only help you become a relatable leader that “gets it!”

#3 Leaders who care about their teams

Ever seen a leader, who shows up to take the glory when things have gone successfully, and is playing hide & seek when the team runs into difficulties? That’s a leader that doesn’t care about the team.

Caring about your teams mean, being available when they need you, being empathetic towards their issues and ready to lend an ear when it’s needed. That’s the kind of leader that earns the respect of their team.

#4 Leaders who are passionate

Leaders who are passionate, inspire motivation and a following. Take Steve Jobs as an example, he may not have been entirely respected due to his personality, but you couldn’t fault his passion for Apple and inventing products.

If you’re passionate about your trade, you’ll automatically care about what you do and who you do it with. Your work will never feel like a chore and this will shine through to your teams.

If your passion is dead, your team will feel like you’re dragging your heels or just plainly unavailable doing other things that interest you.

#5 Leaders who are humble

“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”.....💭

Let’s be clear, being humble doesn’t mean being a push-over. It simply means respecting what you know and not belittle anyone that knows less. Of course, you’re in the leadership position having spent years grinding through the corporate ladder or doing the same job that you now expect your teams to do.

You were once new to this trade too, as some of your team members will be now. Don’t walk around in arrogance and pride, humble yourself and teach the next generation how to behave when they climb the ladder to your position. Lead by example of humility!
